So we decided to raise a few ourselves. When we got to Wilco there was a variety of breeds to choose. Jay picked a breed and I picked breed. Because we picked different breeds I didn't want one chicken to feel "different" form the other hens, so we decided to get 4 chicks (this number will continue to grow!) Two Sex Links,(Jay's pick because they are suppose to be excellent egg layers) and two Jersey Giants (My pick because they are suppose to gentle and good natured) Well I did some research (after we brought them home) and found out that the one PJ loves might be a male because it has a white dot on it's head. Which is fine but roosters don't lay me yummy eggs. And I discovered Jersey Giants grow to be about 15 lbs, the size of a turkey. I am just keeping my fingers crossed for some big yummy jersey giant eggs!
We did name our four chicks. PJ named hers Peaches (from the latest Ice Age Movie, remind you this is the rooster.), GMC named his Honey (that is what he nicknamed his sister "Honey"), I named mine Patty (we got the chicks on St. Patty's Day) and Jay my super creative husband named his chicken...Dinner (no need to explain).
We have converted one of the showers into the chicks home. Until the chicken pen and coupe are complete. Jay is currently building them.
I had no clue how messy and how much these little chicks poop! A little over a week I was back to Wilco getting more bedding for the chicks and noticed that Wilco had received another order of chicks. OMG! They were sooo cute. I called Jay and said would you be upset if I came home with two more chicks? If I could see his face I am sure he was rolling his eyes. He said he didn't care. Yippee! I justified the need for two more chicks because one of the original four turned out to be a rooster and I want eggs. And I could not get only one chick to replace the rooster because then it would have been "different" from the others. I came home with two Rhode Island Red Chicks. PJ and I named them, Rosie (her peak is reddish) and Baby (she is the baby).
So now we have six chickens.
Once they are full grown and outside I will be a much happier chicken owner! Unfortunately we have to wait until August/September before they will produce any eggs for us.
